About us and our breeding program

+ Where are you located?

We are located in Southern California

+ Do you have mini Aussies?

Technically there is only “full size” Aussies and while we may occasionally have aussies that are on the smaller side, we do not clasify any of them being mini aussies.

+ Do you have Aussiedoodles?

No! We will never do a hybrid cross. We strive to produce aussies that are the breed standard and we do not believe that crossing breeds is necessary.

+ Do your puppies come with breeding rights?

No all of our puppies will be sold with limited rights. In some circumstances we may release them after all health testing has been completed for an additional cost.

+ How do you choose your breeding dogs?

Our goal is to produce great family companions that are healthy and well tempered. Temperament and personality are extremely important to us. In addition, their health testing (hips, elbows, eyes, genetic panel etc.), improving the breed, structure and physical characteristics, energy level, trainability and much more are considered in all of our breeding decisions.

+ What is the hardest part of breeding?

Breeding is not for the faint of heart. There can be complications, freak accidents, days of no sleep and constant work to keep them all thriving. Our dogs and our puppies are our lives and spending so much time with them you create a strong bond with all of them. Letting them go home to their new families is extremely difficult for us, but we love being able to share the love and joy that they bring to the world with others.

Purchasing one of our puppies

+ Do you ship your puppies?

No, we do not ship our puppies. We feel it is too hard on them emotionally and physically to be sent via cargo. We require all our clients to pick up their puppies in person and carry them on the plane with them, going to their new home. If you plan in advance, a two-way flight from most US locations to ONT or LAX is often cheaper than shipping via cargo. It just requires a day of your time for travel. We enjoy meeting our clients in person and having a face-to-face transaction. We also cannot control what the puppies come in contact with when they are out of our care. If picked-up in person, the breeder and new owner can be aware of the puppy’s needs and can be cautious of outside diseases. We also offer hand-delivering the puppy directly to you if our travel expenses are paid by the new owner. We understand that making the trip to SoCal can be difficult for some families.

+ Can you call me if I have questions?

Texting and Email is our preferred method of contact and helps us keep track of our many conversations. While we wish we had the time to speak individually on the phone to everyone who sends in an inquiry, we are unable to, due to the high volume of emails we receive on a daily basis. We are happy to chat over the phone with our clients however, it typically must be a scheduled call since we have a lot to plan around. If you cannot find the answer to your questions on this page and do not feel comfortable texting or emailing, we are willing to arrange a phone call.

+ Where can I find more information about your program?

You can find more videos, pictures, and information on our Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest page all @ Welsh Family Aussies

+ Are your dogs AKC registered?

Yes! All our dogs are registered with the AKC. All puppies will go home with their AKC registration packet and will be on limited registration. If you plan on breeding your dog please let us know and we would love to talk to you about what we require.

+ Are your adults health tested?

Yes they are! All of our dogs are tested or cleared by parentage. We also do hip and elbow x-rays to check for any potential signs of hip dysplasia and we also take them to get their eyes checked by a ophthalmologist.

+ How do I get on the wait list?

We require every new family to fill out an application, and if you are approved for one of our puppy's, the next step would be placing a deposit for a future puppy.

+ How much is the deposit?

The deposit is $200 and comes of the final price.

+ Is the deposit refundable?

No, it is not refundable.

+ Is the deposit transferable?

At this time, the deposit is transferable, however, due to our growing list, this may change in the near future. We may have to put a time limit on how many times you “pass”.

+ If something happens and I can't keep my dog, will you take it back?

YES! We will happily take back any puppy/dog bred here by us. In fact, we require first right-of-refusal in our contract. If for any reason a client cannot keep their aussie bred by us, we will happily welcome them back to our home or help in the rehoming process. These dogs are a huge part of our lives and we do not want to lose track of where they are or have any of them end up in shelters or rescues. We will always take them back here! If you have someone that may be a good fit, we are open to helping facilitate a move to a good friend or family member, but we have to be involved in the process to ensure that the dog is going to a good home and that the new owners understand our requirements and contract terms.

Taking your puppy home & future caring

+ When should I take my puppy to the vet when I bring he/her home?

As stated in our contract, we encourage all of our clients to take their new puppy to a licensed veterinarian within 3-days of pick up. Our vet checks all the puppies before departure, but we feel, for peace of mind for the client, it is best to have your vet check the puppies as well.

+ What type of food do you recommend?

We recommend continue feeding Life's Abundance All Life Stages. We have tried many different brands of dog food, and this is by far the best that we have used. All our dogs coats are softer, more shiny, they eat and poop less becasue of the high quality ingredients, and we have never had any issues with the freshness of their products. You can purchase this food directly through the "Products we love" tab under the food category.

+ What are your dogs food schedule?

We prefer to feed all of our dogs on an "open feed" system. We have seen that not being on a feed schedule reduces the chances of them eating too quickly which can upset the stomach and cause them to throw up the meal. If you can get your dog used to having access to food at all times, you reduce the risk of them over eating, eating things they should not be, or being so set in on a schedule that is hard to break.

+ Will my puppy be crate or potty trained when I bring it home?

We start all our puppies on location training, crate training and potty training while they are in our care. However, this is a lengthy process and requires work by the new owners. We do not guarantee mastery from our puppies on the training skills listed above, however they do have a basic knowledge of those skills.

+ How often should I groom my aussie?

Aussies require weekly brushing (more to avoid excess shedding) and we typically bath every other month. Unless they get dirty on hikes or beach days.

+ Can I shave my aussie?

Never shave your Aussie! Contrary to popular belief, shaving your Aussie actually makes them HOTTER! Aussies are a double coated breed and that double coat actually acts as an insulator, keeping them cool. If you shave their coat, it messes up their insulation system and causes them to be warmer. Never let a groomer advise you differently. If they have ”matts”, cut them out, do not shave the area.

+ How do you manage their shedding?

If you keep up on bathing and brushing your Aussie, shedding is manageable. We have also noticed that with the higher the quality of food, the less that ours shed.

+ When should I neuter/spay my puppy?

This is a very controversial subject, and everyone has their own opinions. We recommend doing your research and do what YOU feel is best for your dog. We also recommend you seek your veterinarian’s advice in this process. We do encourage waiting at least until the dog is 9-months-old before altering. If you are capable of keeping the dog away from other intact dogs, waiting later is ideal, but if you risk an accidental breeding it is safer for your dog to be spayed/neutered at an early age.

About our Aussies and the breed

+ How big are your dogs?

Our females are 18-20in tall and 40-50 pounds, our males are 20-22in tall and 45-55 pounds.

+ Do Aussies need a lot of exercise?

Yes! Aussies need daily exercise especially if they are the only dog in the home. On top of physical exercise, all aussies need mental stimulation as well. Puzzles are a great tool with exercising their mind, or teaching them how to carry one of their favorite toys while on a walk can also work them physically and mentally.

+ Can Aussies live in an apartment?

Aussies do need lots of room and exercise, but our Aussies have been fine in apartments. Of course, ALL puppies are energetic and like to run and play, but with daily exercise/walks they mellow out and do fine in small living spaces. Also, with age they will also become calmer. We try to breed Aussies with an “off switch”.

+ Do Aussies like the water?

Like a lot of dogs, some love the water and some hate it. We have some that absolutley love playing in the water, while others hate getting wet. We try and expose all of our puppies with water while they're young so that they hopefully do end up loving the water.

+ Are Aussies good with kids?

We personally do not have any children yet, but like any puppy, they have to be socialized and trained around kids, but they are all capable of being great with kids.
